India's largest mobile operator Bharti Airtel ranks 215 in a global ranking of top brands by Brand Finance. Airtel is 22nd among top telecom brands and the only Indian telecom operator among 500 Top Global Brands.
The ranking listed Vodafone at the most valuable telecom brand. It ranks number 8 while mobile phone maker Nokia dropped out from top 10 most valuable brands across industries. Nokia is placed at number 13 (Number 9 in the previous year). On the other hand, China Mobile ranked number 16, ahead of Japanese operator NTT DOCOMO at number 56, climbing up from 44th position in the previous year's ranking. China Mobile is the 5th most valuable telecom brand in the world.
Airtel, which will soon have 100 million mobile subscribers under its belt, has a brand value of US$3 billion with brand value to enterprise value ratio at 12%. None of the other Indian telcos find a place in the listing that has listed Indian companies like Tata, Reliance, State Bank of India and Wipro from other sectors. Interestingly Tata (manufacturing), which is ranked 51 among top 500, has a number of telecom assets including Tata Teleservices and Tata Communications but none of them figure in the ranking.
In a year marred by a series of failures and scams in the banking sector, telecommunications outclassed banking to emerge as the most valuable top 10 by sector valued at US$148,775 million. Last year it was banking with an aggregate value of US$193 billion across the top 10 financial brands; but that has now dropped to US$127 billion - a fall of 33%, according Brand Finance. This suggests that despite poor showing by many telecom operators and equipment vendors, telecommunications remains relatively less affected by the global economic downturn.
